Our Beginning
The Haut Family had its beginning in Funeral Service in the year 1909, when A.H. Haut of the firm Haut & Marckel in Gackle, ND was called upon to assist a family that did not wish to use the funeral service business in Gackle at that time. In 1909 the firm Haut & Marckel began selling caskets for the burial of the dead.
During these early days, the caskets were made by cabinet makers, who also made furniture and since this firm was selling furniture, it was only natural to accept this allied business. In 1928 Norbert J. Haut became the second generation of the Haut Family in the funeral service, and became a licensed funeral director. In 1953 Eugene N. Haut entered into the funeral service becoming the 3rd Generation.
On January 1, 1959 the Haut Funeral Home business reorganized and relocated to a newly constructed building in Gackle, near the Haut & Marckel Store. The Haut's furnished funeral sales and service, monuments sales and service and also started ambulance service. In the fall of 1965, the ambulance service was discontinued. In 1967 the Haut family arranged for the opening of a funeral home in Jamestown, ND.
In 1984, Roger J. Haut entered the family business as an apprentice embalmer, and became a licensed embalmer/funeral director in 1985. Gary E. Haut entered the family business in 1985 as an apprentice embalmer and was licensed in 1986. In the fall of 1986, the Haut Funeral Homes purchased the Assembly of God Church building in Wishek, North Dakota to begin an operation there. After this addition, there were three full service funeral homes, Jamestown, Gackle and Wishek.
In January of 1993, the Hauts purchased land in the Northeast part of Jamestown on 5th Ave at the 1100 block. On June 1, 1993 they began construction on a new funeral home facility which consists of 12,700 square feet. In January of 2015 Truman Haut became the 5th generation of Hauts to continue serving families in the area.
In June of 2019 Haut Funeral Home completed the addition of their Fellowship Hall. A room with seating for 125 people to have lunch and gather a share memories of loved ones; the addition was done so everything families need is on one level, fully handicap accessible. Haut Funeral Home continues to adapt to make sure they can offer their families everything they need to Celebrate a Life.
