Philip Dewald, 92, Jamestown, ND died Wednesday August 20, 2008 at the Hi-Acres Manor in Jamestown, ND.
Philip Dewald was born January 6, 1916 on the family farmstead NW of Streeter, ND, the son of Peter Dewald and Albina (Doerr) Dewald. He received his elementary education at the local rural school and grew to manhood in the vicinity where he helped on the family farm. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps from July 9, 1930 until October 1, 1934 where he helped with building Medora and the Theodore Roosevelt National Park.
He entered the United States Army April 13, 1942 at Ft. Snelling, MN. He was with the 331st Engineering Battalion and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre in WW II and served in the Aleutian Islands. He was honorably discharged from the Service September 3, 1945 at Ft. Devens, MA with the rank of Grade Tec. 5.
He and Bertha Kirschenmann were married June 7, 1946 at Medina, ND. They made their home on the farm NW Streeter, ND where he farmed until his retirement in 1982. They moved to Jamestown, ND in November of 2005 and have resided here since.
He was a member of the Hope United Church of Christ in Streeter. He served on the church board for many years, a member of the American Legion -Melvin E. Bender Post No. 265, and the Streeter Co-op Board. He enjoyed farming and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Bertha, Jamestown, ND; 2 sons, Darrel (Bonnie) Dewald, Jamestown, ND; David (Elizabeth) Dewald, Bismarck, ND, 5 grandchildren, Matthew (Kristen) Dewald, Sioux City, IA, Mike Dewald, Bismarck, ND, Ryan Dewald, Bismarck, ND, Daniel Dewald, Grand Forks, ND, Nicole Dewald, Jamestown, ND, 1 great grandchild, Maya Dewald, 3 brothers, Otto (Lea) Dewald, Gottfried (Martha) Dewald, Bennie Dewald, all of Streeter, ND; and 3 sisters, Irene Gienger, Sacramento, CA; Pauline Landowski, St. Cloud, MN; and Evangeline (Mike) Nenow, Jamestown, ND.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers, Ephriam, Alfred, Verner, 1 sister, Otillia, and 1 sister in infancy.
The funeral service will be at 10:30 A.M. Saturday August 23, 2008 at the Hope United Church of Christ in Streeter, ND with Chaplin David Fischer, officiating.
The interment will be at the Streeter Cemetery in Streeter, ND.
