Paul Mayer, 96, Jamestown, ND formerly of the Gackle, ND community died Thursday afternoon July 19, 2012 at the Ave Maria Village in Jamestown, ND.

Paul Mayer was born May 16, 1916 on the family farm in Neudorf Township near Gackle, ND, the son of John M. Mayer and Katherine (Geinger) Mayer. He was baptized July 30, 1916 and was confirmed June 22, 1930.

He received his elementary education at the Neudorf Public School and helped on the family farm.

He and Bertha Geinger were married October 12, 1939 at Jamestown, ND. They made their home on the same farm that Paul was born on. Paul grew up and lived on the same farm for over 60 years. In 1976, they retired and moved to Gackle, where they built their home. After the death of his wife, in 1997, he continued to reside in Gackle until he entered the Heritage Center in April of 2008 and the Ave Maria Village in November of 2010.

He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Gackle. He also served as director of the Gackle Co-op Oil Company. He was on the Hospital Board, the Gackle Future Development Board, church council as deacon and Sunday School Superintendant, and he was a member of the Brotherhood. He was the church custodian for 15 years and he enjoyed doing odd jobs for people. He also did Rugs by Paul for 14 years.

Paul had a gift of compassion for visiting with people and reaching out to them.

He is survived by his children, Ardina (Elmo) Bentz, Jamestown, ND; Rueben Mayer, Bottineau, ND; 3 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; 1 sister, Ida Brosz, Jamestown, ND, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Bertha, 1 son, Wallace, 1 grandson, Troy Bentz, 6 brothers, John, Ben, August, Gust, Leonhardt, Ludwig, and 6 sisters, Eva, Christina, Mathilda, Lydia, Anna and Rosina.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday July 25, 2012 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Gackle, ND with Pastor Linda Schauer, officiating.

The interment will be at the Gackle Cemetery in Gackle, ND

Visitation: 1-5 Monday and 9-8 Tuesday at the Haut Funeral Chapel in Jamestown.

Prayer Service: 7:00 PM Tuesday evening at the Haut Funeral Chapel in Jamestown.
