Olassa E. Schlenker, 87, Jamestown, ND, died late Tuesday evening, July 14, 2015, at the Ave Maria Village in Jamestown, ND.
Elsie Schlenker was born March 19, 1928, in Canada, the daughter of Michael Welygan and Anna (Schwetz) Welygan. She grew up in Gronlid, Saskatchewan, where she received her elementary and high school education and grew to womanhood.
She and Joseph Schlenker were married July 12, 1950, in Nipawin, SK, Canada. They made their home on a farm east of Alfred, ND, where they farmed for over 50 years. Following the death of her husband Joseph May 31, 2001, she continued to reside on the farm until 2009 when she moved into Jud. She later moved to the Gackle Care Center for a short time before moving to the Ave Maria Village in Jamestown in January of 2013.
Elsie was a member of the Alfred Church of God Seventh Day. She served as a Sabbath School teacher for many years. Elsie also enjoyed waitressing at the Jud Café and met good friends there. Her hobbies included gardening, crafts, crocheting, quilting, and reading her Bible. Elsie was very competitive when it came to participating in sports and board games; she played to win. She was a very talented musician, playing multiple instruments, and a singer who could sing any part of a song. Hospitality was one of her strong gifts. Over the years, she fed hundreds of church people, family members, and visitors in her home. Elsie chose to focus on the positives of life, and you would usually find her with a welcoming smile on her face.
