Melvin Schwind, 85, Jamestown, ND died Monday evening November 5, 2007 at the Central Dakota Village in Jamestown, ND.
Melvin Schwind was born November 15, 1921 at Zeeland, ND the son of Henry Schwind and Magdalena (Meidinger) Schwind. He attended the local rural Freeda School where he received his elementary education and grew to manhood in the vicinity.
He entered the United States Army December 12, 1942 at Fort Snelling, MN. He served in the European/African/Middle Eastern Theater. He received the Purple Heart for wounds in the European Theater of Operations. He was discharged November 12, 1945 at Camp McCoy, WI with the rank of Staff Sergeant.
He and Erna Reich were married January 19, 1947 at Zeeland, ND. They made their home on a farm near Zeeland until 1948 when they moved to a farm west of Wishek. In 1959 they moved to a farm near Lehr. In the fall of 1964 they moved to Jamestown and he worked for Al Magnesun in construction for 1 year. He then went to work for Henry Van Beek for a couple of hears before starting Schwind Construction. He built over one hundred homes in Jamestown before retiring in 1990 at the age of 70. In 2004 he entered the Wishek Retirement Home for a short time before entering the Central Dakota Village at Jamestown.
He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Life member of the Eagles Club and the D.A.V.
He is survived by his wife Erna, Jamestown, ND, 6 children, Ronald (Cheryl) Schwind, Donald Schwind, Karon (Tom) Steckler, Sylvia (Don) Williams, Jeff Schwind, Renee Schwind, all of Jamestown, ND, 17 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 5 brothers, Waltmer (Bertha) Schwind, Wishek, ND, Margetus (Eva) Schwind, Fargo, ND, Howard Schwind, Spokane, WA, Garold (Bea) Schwind, Goldsboro, NC, Harley (Lola) Schwind, LaMoure, ND, 7 sisters, Hildegard Kuehl, Kenmore, WA, Elsie (Al) Schatz, Mandan, ND, LaVerne Walth, Lodi, CA, Marlus Reese, Napoleon, OH, Beatrice (Floyd) Roehrich, Mandan, ND, Jeanette Rudolf, Chelen, WA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 son Todd, 1 daughter Karol, and 6 brothers.
The funeral service will be at 2:00 P.M. Friday November 9, 2007 at the United Presbyterian Church, Jamestown, ND, with Rev. David Thompson, pastor officiating.
The interment will be made in the Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown, ND.
