Melvin Ackerman, 85, Jamestown, ND died Saturday morning April 17, 2010 at the Jamestown Hospital in Jamestown, ND.

Melvin was born December 4, 1924 on the family farm home 5 miles west of Streeter, ND, the son of William Ackerman and Barbara (Schmidt) Ackerman. He attended school in the Streeter area where he received his elementary education and grew to manhood in the vicinity.

He and Virginia Moser were married July 25, 1945 at Jamestown, ND. They made their home on his parent's farm until 1947. He went to work at Streeter Auto and also helped his brother at Ackerman's Garage in Streeter. In 1949 he went to work road construction as a heavy equipment operator until 1978. He then went to work in the powerhouse at the ND State Hospital until retiring in 1987. They have continued to reside in Jamestown.

He was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church, enjoyed soap making, working and going to rummage sales. He also enjoyed visiting with the afternoon coffee crowd at McDonalds.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia, Jamestown, ND; 2 children, Ronald (Patti) Ackerman, Salem, OR; Sandra Ackerman, Medina, ND; 5 grandchildren, Janel (Matt) Bennett, Michael (Dana) Ackerman, Sarah (Michael) Thomsen, Melanie Kappes, Nicole Kappes, 7 great grandchildren, and other special members of the family, Bernell Williams, Medina, ND; Josh Kurtz, Jamestown, ND; Aaron Ritter, Jamestown, ND; many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and 1 brother, Alvin.

The funeral service will be at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday April 21, 2010 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Jamestown, ND with Pastor Harlan Kaden, officiating.

The interment will be made in the Streeter Lutheran Cemetery at Streeter, ND.

Visitation - 9:00 A.M. - 8:00 P.M. Tuesday @ the funeral home
