LeRoy Presler

LeRoy H. Presler, 91, Gackle, ND died Tuesday March 17, 2020 at Touchmark Assisted Living in Fargo, ND.

LeRoy was born on the family farm near Gackle, ND, on February 5, 1929.  As he grew up, he developed interests in farming, horses, cattle, and working with metal.  These interests, along with his faith in Jesus and his service in the Marine Corps, were major influences throughout his life.

During the Korean Conflict he served in the Marine Corps and was stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and the Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, in California, where he served as a mechanic.

After his service in the Marine Corps he returned to Gackle to marry Magdelina (Maggie) Miller and begin a farming operation of their own.  They lived on that farm for 65 years, raising a variety of crops that included wheat, oats, barley, flax, sunflowers, Jerusalem artichokes, and corn.  They also raised Herford, Simmental, and Gelbvieh beef cattle and Holstein and Brown Swiss dairy cattle.  He always enjoyed working with horses and usually had at least one on the farm.

Their marriage of over 66 years was blessed with three children.

LeRoy was active at Neudorf Lutheran Church and Emmanuel Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday School and serving as deacon and treasurer and lending a helping hand whenever there was an opportunity.  After their move to Fargo he looked forward to weekly Bible studies at Atonement Lutheran Church.  He was also active in the American Legion Mayer-Morlock post, serving as its chaplain for many years.  He applied his engineering skills in many ways, ranging from maintenance and troubleshooting of rural telephone lines to plumbing the house that they built to designing and building numerous tools for use on the farm.

He always enjoyed time spent with friends and relatives.  He took up fishing in his retirement and always enjoyed it, whether he caught anything or not, as long as he could do it with one of his fishing buddies.  He enjoyed traveling, especially if it offered the opportunity to see friends or relatives.  He and Maggie used every mode of transportation they could, including car, train, plane, and ship.  He also enjoyed learning from museum visits and always wanted to read every display’s description when his vision still allowed it.

He is survived by his wife, Maggie; children, Dwayne (Cheryl) Presler, West Fargo, ND; Marty Presler, Bismarck, ND; and Marella Sebring, Anoka, MN; grandchildren, Jonathan (Christy) Presler, Syracuse, NY, Alexandra Presler, Grand Forks, ND; Adam Presler, St. Paul, MN; and Sierra Sebring, Zimmerman, MN; one great-granddaughter, Zoe Presler, Syracuse, NY; one brother, Walter Presler, Jamestown, ND; three sisters, Alvina Heidinger, Jamestown, ND; Delores Moser, Fargo, ND; and Trudy Kassman, Nyssa, OR, one brother-in-law, Marvin (JoAnne) Miller, Gackle, ND; four sisters-in-law, Darlene Trautman, Medina, ND; Janet (John) Henke, Gackle, ND; Hulda (Daniel) Peterson, Hodlrege, NE; and LorRaine (Ralph) Rivinius, Streeter, ND; and numerous nieces and nephews.
