Howard Harris Worm, 85, Valley City, ND, formerly of Kulm, ND with his life's journey completed, passed away February 24, 2011 at the Sheyenne Care Center Circle of Life Cottage Valley City, where he was a resident for 4 years, whom the staff fondly called Grandpa.
Howard was born September 21, 1925 in Lansing, IA, the son of Otto and Helen (Bonin) Worm. He grew up in Lansing and graduated from Lansing High School in 1942 and was a full fledged River Rat. Due to his age, he was not allowed to enlist in the US Army until February 1944.
He and Velma Randall were married April 1, 1945; he was discharged from the Army in 1946. He used a VA grant to attend 1 year of trade school and went to work for the Soo Line Railroad as a Depot Agent. They lived in Nashua, MN: Victor, SD: New Effington, SD; where they started raising their 3 sons. From here they moved to Ellendale, ND: Drake, ND: and Kulm, ND. He retired in 1986 and they spent their winters in McAllen, TX.
Howard was involved in many community activities along with a few business ventures, Howies Service and Laundromat New Effington, DeKalb seed sales, Pheasant Lanes, Ellendale. After moving to Kulm, he served on the city council and the mayor. He was active on the church board, ambulance board and was on of the original members to get the Kulm Golf course started. He was also a member of the Masons and the Vets.
He enjoyed golfing (having 4 "Hole In One"), hunting, ice cream, watching baseball, and football on TV.
He is survived by 3 sons, Stephan (Dee) Worm, New Ulm, MN: Kenneth (Jeanne) Worm, St. Louis Park, MN: Paul (Sandy) Worm, Jamestown, ND: 7 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Velma of 59 years, 1 brother, Floyd, and 1 sister, Mryta.
The memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday April 1, 2011 at Zion United Methodist Church in Kulm, ND.
