Elva D. Gutschmidt, 81, Gackle, ND died Sunday morning April 4, 2010 at the Wishek Home for the Aged in Wishek, ND.

Elva Ost was born August 23, 1928 near Fredonia, ND, the daughter of Ben and Emma (Ruff) Ost. She attended the local rural school where she received her elementary education and grew to womanhood in the vicinity.

Elva married Wilbert Gutschmidt on June 25, 1950 at her parent's farm near Fredonia, ND. They made their home on Wilbert's family farm 14 miles South of Gackle for 45 years. Elva worked at the Kulm Super Valu for a short time during the early years of their marriage. In 1995 they moved into Gackle for their retirement. She entered the Wishek Home for the Aged in January of 2006.

She was a member of the Nazareth Congregational Church in Fredonia, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Fredonia, ND and in 1968 became a member of the United Church of Christ in Gackle. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, gardening and reading. She was an excellent cook of many German dishes.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Wilbert, Gackle, ND; 2 sons, Paul (Donna) Gutschmidt, Devils Lake, ND; Roger (Linda) Gutschmidt, Gackle, ND; 5 grandchildren, David Gutschmidt, NDSU Fargo, ND; Mark and Hope Gutschmidt, Devils Lake, ND; John and Sarah Gutschmidt, Gackle, ND; brother, Oscar (Viola) Ost, Lehr; sister, Edna Koenig, Kulm, ND; sister-in-law, Viola Ost, Kulm, ND, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Edmund.

The funeral service will be at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday April 7, 2010, at the United Church of Christ in Gackle, ND, with Rev. Tim Blackman officiating.

The burial will be made in the Gackle Cemetery at Gackle, ND.
