Elmer Schweitzer, 79, Jamestown, ND died Saturday night September 26, 2009 at his home in Jamestown, ND.

Elmer was born August 7, 1930 at family farm home south of Gackle, the son of Gottfried and Maria (Janke-Wolf) Schweitzer. He attended the local rural school where he received his elementary education. In 1944 they moved into Gackle where he attended and graduated from Gackle High School in 1944.

He enlisted in the United States Air Force October 20, 1948 at Fargo, ND and was separated December 2, 1952 at George AFB, CA with the rank of SSG.

He enrolled in Valley City State College in 1953 and graduated in 1957. He taught school in Isabel, SD and Streeter, ND.

He and Ida Haack were married March 29, 1959 at Streeter, ND. The family moved to Winston, OR in 1959 to 1965 where Elmer taught school and coached. In 1965 they moved to Granville, ND and to Napoleon in 1966 where they resided until 1973. During the summers he attended NDSU at Fargo where he obtained his MA in education, guidance, and counseling. They moved to Gackle in 1973 where he was superintendent until 1981. They moved to Bismarck where he worked for Strommen and Associates in the insurance business. Following the death of his wife May 16, 1982 he continued to reside in Bismarck.

He and Joan Dillenberg were married October 21, 1983 at Bismarck, ND. They lived in Bismarck from 1983 to 1988 when he went to work for the First State Bank of Gackle until his retirement December 31, 1997. They moved to Jamestown in 2001where they have continued to reside.

He was a member of the Atonement Lutheran Church in Jamestown, ND, the Lions Club, American Legion, and the Elks.

He is survived by his wife, Joan, Jamestown, ND; his children, Clyde (Fran) Haack, Wasilla, AK; Joletta (Doug) Mays, Sandy Lake, PA; Karla (Keary) Brewster, Lake Lida, MN; Cheryl (Jerry) Schweitzer-Davis, Los Angeles, CA; 2 step-sons, Mark (Dana) Dillenberg, Denton, TX; Paul Dillenberg, Arlington, TX; 7 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 1 brother, Bill Schweitzer, Boise, ID; 1 sister, Elsie Wutzke, Myrtle Creek, OR.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, 3 sisters and 9 brothers.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 AM Thursday October 1, 2009 at Atonement Lutheran Church in Jamestown, ND with Pastor Steve Bernston, officiating

Interment will be at St. Lukes Lutheran Cemetery in Streeter, ND

Visitation: 9 - 9 Wednesday September 30, 2009 at the Haut Funeral Chapel in Jamestown.

Prayer Service: 7:00 PM Wednesday at the Haut Funeral Chapel in Jamestown.
