Donald (Don) Richard Bloyer, 87, died September 21, 2012, in Salt Lake City.
He was born June 16, 1925 at Claylick, Pennsylvania, the fourth child of John Earl and Nancy May (Carbaugh) Bloyer. His siblings were John, Dorothy, Howard and Eugene (all deceased) and Harold, of Edgewood, Maryland.
Don graduated from Mercersburg (Pennsylvania) High School in 1942 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. A veteran of World War II, he was assigned to the Marshall Islands where he served in the Navy Signal Corps.
He married Esther Katherine Schauer of Medina, North Dakota, in December 1946. Two sons and five daughters were born to them: Rick Bloyer of Henderson, Nevada ([email protected]), Kathleen Whitaker of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Brenda Bloyer of Dugway, Utah ([email protected]); Nancy Mitchell of Hayden, Idaho; Gretchen Bloyer of Salt Lake City; Shaun Bloyer of Bountiful, Utah; and Heidi Slagle of Sandy, Utah. Don and Esther now have 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
After attending business college he worked in private industry and then as an auditor for several federal government departments. When the opportunity presented itself in 1963, Don and Esther accepted a European assignment and moved the family to Orleans, France, and then to Munich, Germany. The family traveled extensively throughout most of Europe. Education for children was by an international community of teachers.
In 1968, the family returned to the U.S. and to Lansdowne, Pennsylvania. The family relocated to Salt Lake City in 1970 when Don accepted the offer to manage the Health, Education and Welfare Department's Audit Agency office here. He retired in 1976.
In retirement, Don and Esther enjoyed their kids and grandkids, and they liked traveling to national parks and visiting relatives. Don liked fishing, watching baseball and basketball, card games with family, morning coffee with his buds, tinkering in the garage, fixing things around the house, the big bands and other music of the 40-60's eras, and fussing with the family pets. Esther passed away in April 2011 and Don lived quietly at their home at the base of the Wasatch Mountain range in the Salt Lake Valley until his death.
The family would like to send thanks to the caregivers at Care Source and to Meals on Wheels for the gentle and precious comfort and companionship they showed both Don and Esther during their last months and years.
Funeral services was held at the Christ United Methodist Church, 2375 East 3300 South, Salt Lake City, on September 29, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be beside Esther at 4:30 PM Thursday October 11, 2012 in the Medina cemetery, Medina, North Dakota.
