Darrell Martin

Darrell Martin, 80, Wimbledon, ND, died Tuesday, January 14, 2025 at CHI Mercy Health in Valley City, ND.

Darrell D. Martin was born March 5th, 1944, at Petersville Township ND the first child of 6 to Johnny & Lydia Martin. When He was 3 years old, he moved with his family to a farm east of Wimbledon where he lived until 1999.  In 1960 his Father died in an accident, and he became the head of the home and a full-time farmer.

Darrell was a proud graduate of the infamous class of 1962. His class was self-proclaimed to be the best class Wimbledon would ever graduate. He completed an Agriculture course at NDSU.

He married Jackie Haas on 12-16-67 and they had two children Linn Suttle and Jon (Rachelle) Martin. Jackie died in an accident in 1997.

Darrell farmed his whole life. He also drove school bus in his early days then delivered mail for many years until his retirement in 2001.

He served his church, St. Paul’s Lutheran, in many capacities including President of the Congregation and then as elder in the last 20+ years. He also served on the Frazier Elevator board, played on Men’s and mixed bowling leagues in Hannaford and Jamestown, and pitched for the Wimbledon Merchants Softball team. He was an officer and member of the Spiritwood Lake Fishing Club and was a member of the Highway 9 Car Club. He and LuAnn volunteered as hosts at the Midland Continental Museum. He was an avid and skilled card player, always willing for a game. His favorite was pinochle. They played regularly at Sodbusters in Sibley and enjoyed the group. They taught their grandchildren and then enjoyed playing with them and family and friends. His interests also included classic cars and fishing. He took pride for many years in being the first person to fish on the ice and the last one off.

He married LuAnn (Sodawasser) Clemens in 2001, and they lived on a farm SW of Wimbledon until 2024 when they moved to their home in Wimbledon.

He is survived by his wife LuAnn, children, Linn Suttle & Jon (Rachelle) Martin, stepchildren, Ken (Jenny) Clemens, Tressi Mitchell and Matt (Jess) Clemens. Grandchildren, Chafen Suttle, Braydon (Gianna) Clemens, Austin Suttle, Baylee (Trajan Hannum) Clemens, Grace Suttle, MaTia Martin, Bryan Mitchell, Hunter Mitchell, Hope (Quincy Pfister) Suttle, and Logan Clemens. Great Granddaughters, Willow Clemens, & Halo Pfister. Siblings, Jim (Jan) Martin, JoAnn (Ellis) Blinsky, Wayne Martin, Marv Martin and Karen (Clete) Lipetzky. And many treasured nieces, nephews, cousins and God children

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Jackie and grandsons Caleb Martin & Luke Martin.

Darrell was a man of faith and integrity. He treasured his family and friends and built wonderful relationships with them. If you would ask someone that knew him the consensus would be he was a good man, and his loved ones would wholeheartedly agree.


Interment will take place in the spring at Prairie View Cemetery-Wimbledon, ND.
