Alma Janke was born December 6, 1922 at the Family farm 12 miles south of Gackle, ND, at the Janke farmstead, the daughter of Andreas Janke and Magdalena (Lippert) Janke. She received her elementary education at the local rural school, and learned all the facets of the farm and home. She started cooking with her mother at the age of 8.
She and John Schott were married December 5, 1943 at the St. James Lutheran Church southeast of Gackle. They made their home on the farm of his parent's 7 miles south of Gackle where they continued to live, and had two children Wallace and Linda. Alma worked at Remboldt's Clothing and the Gackle Care Center as a Certified Dietary Manager. After the death of her husband, September 6, 1990, she continued to live in Gackle. In July of 2012 she moved to her daughter's (Linda) in Moorhead.
She took great pride in her flower and vegetable gardens, crocheting doilies and afghans. She loved to visit with neighbors, friends and relatives. She always enjoyed being with her family no matter what occasion it was, or where they were going. She even traveled with her family last February to Mexico. Alma was always interested in learning and trying new things, and because of that she accomplished many great things using her creative abilities. Alma was an avid baker; she enjoyed creating and decorating wedding cakes. Her culinary and baking skills were noticed and she was asked to share in making a video called "Recipes from Grandma's Kitchen". She also started a cookbook project with the Germans from Russia Heritage Collection Department at NDSU in Fargo. She was such an inspiration to many young people around her with her open mindedness and young thinking. Alma will be dearly missed by her family, friends and all those who knew her.
