ALBERTA FRANCES BART HOLADAY
Alberta Frances Bart Holaday died August 26, 2012, at her home in Jamestown, ND. She was born May 2, 1917, in Las Animas, CO, the daughter of Alva Carl and Alma Leona (Myers) Bart. She graduated from Las Animas High School in 1935. She attended Simpson College in Indianola, IA, for three years, where she met Sidney Earl Holaday, a native Iowan and her future husband. She then attended Denver University her senior year and married Sidney Holaday in a little log church in Palmer Lake, CO, June 8, 1939, the day after she graduated from DU. After one year in Limon, CO, they returned to Iowa, where Sidney taught and coached. They moved to Jamestown, ND, in 1948, when Sidney became head of the accounting and business department at Jamestown College. After Sidney passed the CPA exam in 1949 and started an accounting practice, Alberta worked with him in the practice until the mid-1980's.
One of Alberta's major hobbies was needlecraft (counted cross-stitch, needlepoint, hand-stitched felt and sequin Christmas ornaments, Norwegian needlepoint, crewel). The homes of numerous friends and family, as well as her own, are filled with her beautiful creations. She also enjoyed gardening, avidly worked crossword puzzles and read voraciously. A lifetime interest in birds and wildlife meant that for over fifty years her backyard was a year-round feeding and bathing facility for birds, ducks, rabbits, squirrels and other small animals.
While her children were growing up, she was wholeheartedly involved in their activities, serving as PTA president, Cub Scout den mother, Brownie and Girl Scout leader, Rainbow Associate Mother Advisor, Sunday School teacher, football mother, band mother and chauffeur to state events for swim teams, Rainbow girls and science fair participants.
Alberta was a member of PEO, Portfolio Club, Order of Eastern Star, AAUW, Republican Women's Club, Delta Delta Delta Sorority, Daughters of the American Revolution and seven other hereditary societies. She was a local or state officer in most of these organizations. She belonged to the United Presbyterian Church in Jamestown.
She was a loving wife and mother, a loyal and generous friend and a kind and caring neighbor, who tried to leave the world and the lives of those she touched better for her existence. She will be lovingly remembered, and her sense of humor will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her son Bart Holaday of Grand Forks, ND and Colorado Springs, CO, daughter Janet Holaday of Jamestown, ND, grandchildren Patrick Holaday and Brett Holaday of Dallas, TX, and sisters Leona Peery of Los Altos, CA, and Cleona Duncan of Newcastle, CA. She was predeceased by her parents and her husband.
Her cremains will be buried beside her husband Sidney Holaday in the Holaday family plot in Greenfield Cemetery, Greenfield, IA, in a private ceremony. Memorial service plans will be announced at a later date. The family would prefer that any memorials be made to the Sidney E. and Alberta B. Holaday Scholarship at Jamestown College.
